On 30 th April 2018, a group of students from Bachelor of Microbiology has visited Institute of Bioscience, UPM. The purpose of us visiting IBS was to learn more on culture collection as IBS actually provided services on culture collection from all around Malaysia. This services were put under the Microbial Culture Collection Unit or also known as UNiCC where samples from different states in Malaysia were kept and preserved. At 2.50pm, all of the students supervised by Mr. Syazwan and Miss Aina were gathered at Bilik Tongkat Ali Emas for short briefing from Pn. Musliyana Mansur, officer who was in charge of UNiCC. Basically, UNiCC was established on 2008 after the opening of IBS at 1996 where all the researches sample are preserved. UNiCC was initiated in to maintain and manage a duplicate of available microbial strains in UPM. UNiCC also aspires to provide strains for researcher and teaching laboratories. The objectives of UNiCC are to establish and maintain a microbial culture c

This week, we had a visit to Yakult Factory at Seremban, Negeri Sembilan. After finishing our lab session on the morning, we straight away rode the bus for one hour trip to Seremban. I personally enjoyed the trip so much as I talked so much during the trip. Oh my goodness, I think others are starting to get annoyed of me lol. Back to the trip, we reached the factory around 2.30pm where we meet Sis Yakult as our instructor. She brought us into the factory and walked us through the processes that happened before a bottle of yakult is placed in the fridge. There are milk procession room, microbiology laboratory, chiller and packaging machines where all the yakult culture milk have to go through. We are not allowed to take photos during the visiting session. The most interesting part of the visit is that we all get one bottle of free yakult milk for free. Yes!!! The culture drinks is so delicious and contain lots of good bacteria which is Lactobacillus casei

E-Portfolio Microbiology II Week 5

Assalam people! This week we basically sat in our groups where we have to discuss for our assignment. For my group, we chose Archaea as our assignment topic. We discussed and we did flowcharts on how to inoculate archaea from the environment. We also discussed our project on Microbes on The News where we have to do an advertisement video on how microorganisms help human and environment. We also had our first test for this semester. Wish us luck!!! Thank you.

E-Portfolio Microbiology II Week 4

Assalam and hi all, This week Dr Wan taught us of the topic of Aspects of Biotechnology in Microbial Ecology where we learned about the beneficial and harmful effects of microorganisms. Generally, microorganisms can be divided into four types which are: Microbes as Pollutants Microbes as Cause of Pollution Microbes as Indicator of Pollution Microbes may reduce Pollution Bioremediation  Process used to treat contaminated media, including water, soil and subsurface material, by altering environmental conditions to stimulate growth of microorganisms and degrade the target pollutants. In many cases, bioremediation is less expensive and more sustainable than other remediation alternatives. Biological treatment is a similar approach used to treat wastes including wastewater, industrial waste and solid waste.

Hello! This week we learned about Principles of Ecology. Basically, ecology is the study of organisms and their interactions with the environment and also the relationships between living and nonliving parts of the environment. It discuss more on how producers, consumers and decomposers are related to each other. Also, how energy flows work in the ecosystem. From this picture you can see the hierarchy of ecology that connects everything.

Hello and assalamualaikum everybody! This would be my first entry for this semester for for subject BMY3102, Microbiology II. This semester we will have three lecturers who will be teaching us which are Dr Wan Zuhainis herself, Dr Suriana and Dr Asilah. We started this week with Dr Wan where we learned about Microbial Systematic of Fungi, Algae and Protozoa Basically, this topic is about the morphological structures, the nutrition, reproduction and the main classification of these microorganisms.  Fungi  The Kingdom Fungi includes some of the most important organisms, both in terms of their ecological and economic roles. By breaking down dead organic material, they continue the cycle of nutrients through ecosystems. In addition, most vascular plants could not grow without the symbiotic fungi, or mycorrhizae, that inhabit their roots and supply essential nutrients. Other fungi provide numerous drugs (such as penicillin and other antibiotics), foods like mushrooms, truffle
